Hargreaves out for season

Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

The 27-year-old midfielder has been forced to undergo surgery as he looks to correct his long-standing knee problem.

Hargreaves has been plagued by injury problems during his Old Trafford career and has started just 17 Premier League games since his 2007 move from Bayern Munich.

The England international has been restricted to just three appearances this season and has not featured since the 1-1 draw at Chelsea in September.

United sent him to see renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman last week and it was decided he would need to have surgery to cure the injury.

Hargrevaves has undergone an operation on his right knee and is due to have surgery on his left knee in a fortnight.

It means he will miss the rest of the campaign as United look to defend their Premier League and UEFA Champions League crowns.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson declared the operation a success and hopes that it will finally cure Hargreaves of the niggling problem.

"Well the operation went well," Ferguson told Sky Sports News. "He goes back in a few weeks' time to get the left knee done and it means he is out for the season.

"Hopefully it will finally put it [the ongoing problem] to rest we feel and we have sent him to the best man.

"The last thing you want to do is to be operated on, but once you make that decision you hope it is a success."
