Cesc Fabregas has spoken of his pride at being appointed the new captain at Arsenal.
The Spanish schemer was awarded the honour by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger on Monday.
His promotion to the role comes in the wake of ill-advised comments from former skipper William Gallas, which ultimately cost him the armband.
Fabregas was thought to be among the contenders to take the captaincy following Thierry Henry's departure from North London 18 months ago - but missed out to French centre-half Gallas.
However, he has now been awarded the added on-field responsibility and is determined to repay the faith shown in him by his manager.
"It is a great honour for me to captain one of the biggest clubs in the world," Fabregas told the club's official website.
"It is a proud moment. I know it's a big responsibility but together with my team-mates, I know we have the spirit and commitment to get back to winning ways and fulfil our potential."
Fabregas will lead Arsenal out for the first time when the Gunners face Dynamo Kiev in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
