Berbatov back in training

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov is in contention to return from injury in Sunday's derby against Manchester City.

Berbatov has missed United's last two games against Aston Villa and Villarreal after picking up a hamstring problem on international duty with Bulgaria last week.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping that the big-money signing will return to training on Thursday ahead of the weekend's game at the City of Manchester Stadium, live on Sky Sports 1.

Ferguson is wary about taking any risks on Berbatov's fitness and will assess the forward in training before deciding whether to include him in his team to face City.

"On the injury front, we're hoping Berbatov starts training today," said Ferguson. "With hamstrings you have to be careful.

"It's not an easy one. He's never had a hamstring injury before.

"We have to judge whether it's wise to use him on Sunday or put him on the bench. It depends how he trains."

Edwin van der Sar will return to the team against City after being rested against Villarreal, but Gary Neville and Paul Scholes are not yet ready to make their respective comebacks.

Ferguson added: "We gave Edwin gave a rest on Tuesday and he'll play on Sunday. His experience is always important on these occasions.

"Gary Neville started training yesterday, and Scholes may be involved next week sometime, but definitely not this game."
