Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp failed to mark his 25 years in management with a win after playing out a goalless draw at Aston Villa on Saturday.
On paper this game was a six-pointer as both side's aim for qualification into Europe via the league.
Villa started the brightest in the first half but it was the visitors who created the best chance after 28 minutes when Armand Traore's powerful shot was denied by the post.
The home side were denied a penalty with 20 minutes to go when David James collided with Gabriel Agbonlahor in the box, referee Mike Riley waving away Villa appeals.
It was Portsmouth who also had the best chance of the second half, Jermain Defoe firing a right-footed effort inches over the bar from 10-yards after 79 minutes.
Just minutes later Sean Davis was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for a foul on Stiliyan Petrov.
