The Brazilian midfielder had thought to be close to a move to the Emirates however Setanta Sports report that Mineiro had a successful medical at Stamford Bridge yesterday and is close to completing a move.
According to Luiz Felipe Scolari’s agent, Flavio Murtosa, a deal for the player is imminent. Speaking to Radio Bandeirantes, Murtosa revealed he would shortly be a Chelsea player. “We have practically completed the recruitment of Mineiro,” said Scolari’s assistant, “He was available, out of contract with the German club, and at this time we had the chance to hire him and satisfy our need [for a new midfielder].” Mineiro, 32, will join the West London side and compete with John Obi Mikel for a role in midfield following the injury to Essien.
The Ghanaian suffered a cruciate ligament injury whilst on international duty which is thought likely to rule him out for the majority of the season. Meanwhile, Mineiro, is a free agent, after he was released by his previous club, Bundesliga side, Hertha Berlin. He joined Berlin in 2007 having previously spent virtually his entire career in Brazil playing for Sao Paulo, Sao Caetano and Ponte Preta.
The Brazilian has 25 international caps but despite interesting Arsenal, as well as Chelsea, Arsene Wenger reportedly decided against signing him despite being short of numbers in midfield following the departures of Matthieu Flamini and Gilberto Silva. Chelsea entertain Manchester United at Stamford Bridge tomorrow where a victory for Scolari’s men will see them move nine points clear of the champions.
